PACE Committee urges Armenia to ensure access to water for residents of Azerbaijani frontline areas

The PACE Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development has approved the draft resolution, which calls on the Armenian authorities to stop using the water resources "as a tool of political influence." This was reported by the message posted on the PACE's website on November 26.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 2, 2013, Azerbaijan urged the European Parliament to demand from Armenia to carry out major repairs on the dam of the Sarsang Reservoir.

According to the resolution approved by the PACE Committee, because of the failure of regular maintenance of the dam for more than 20 years, the situation at the Sarsang Reservoir "represents a danger for the entire border region." The project emphasizes that the Sarsang dam is in poor condition, and that fact creates a humanitarian and environmental problem and can result in "a disaster with a high death toll."

To solve the problem, the PACE Committee has called on for the immediate withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces. According to the authors of the draft resolution, the withdrawal of troops will allow engineers and hydrologists to get access to the Sarsang dam to carry out a detailed survey at the place.
