Experts: 10 years after attack on Nalchik, factors of radicalization still not disappear

During 10 years passed since the militants' attack on Nalchik in 2005, the authorities did not eliminate the factors contributing to the radicalization of young people. This opinion was expressed by the experts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot". According to the experts, Kabardino-Balkaria is still unable to overcome the consequences of the attack.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that as a result of the attack on Nalchik committed on October 13, 2005, 35 law enforcers and soldiers, 14 civilians, and 92 attackers were killed. In 2008, the trial in the case was started.

According to a source close to the investigation, several months prior to the attack on Nalchik, law enforcers detained a bodyguard of Musa Mukozhev, the head of the Muslim community of the city, Director of the Kabardino-Balkarian Institute of Islamic Studies.

"An electronic data carrier was seized from him. In its archive, investigators discovered a file with the plan of the attack on the city and the full list of the people involved," the source has said.

Journalist Orkhan Djemal has expressed his doubts about the information got by FSB agents from the detained bodyguard of Musa Mukozhev. However, the journalist has noted that the attack on the city might not be a surprise to the authorities.

According to Valery Khatazhukov, the leader of the Kabardino-Balkarian Regional Human Rights Centre, national organizations could become a mediator between the authorities and Muslim youth; however, they had also been subjected to pressure.
