Russian SC upholds verdict to resident of Dagestan sentenced for extremism

The Russian Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed the appeals filed by the defender and the prosecutor against the verdict to Shamil Omarov, a resident of Dagestan, who was sentenced to five years of imprisonment in a penal colony on the charge of involvement in the activities of the organization "Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami".

In May, the North-Caucasian District Military Court found Shamil Omarov guilty of involvement in the extremist organization "Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami", banned in Russia, and of plotting the violent overthrow of the government, the "TASS" reports.

Shamil Omarov admitted his guilt and concluded an agreement with investigators, so his case was considered in a special manner.

The verdict was challenged by the defender and the prosecutor, who found the punishment unfounded. In his turn, the prosecutor called the punishment too lenient, the RAPSI (Russian Agency of Legal and Judicial Information) reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in February, in Dagestan, the court found Khabib Magomedov, a resident of Buynaksk, guilty of involvement in the activities of the organization "Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami" and arms trafficking and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony.
