Union "Women of Don" appeal to ECtHR to challenge Court's decision on its inclusion in register of "foreign agents"

The Union "Women of Don" of the city of Novocherkassk of the Rostov Region has filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) against the Court' decision to include the Union in the register of "foreign agents".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2013, the Prosecutor's Office of Novocherkassk filed a claim against the Union "Women of Don" to include it in the register of "foreign agents". On May 14, 2014, the judge of the Novocherkassk City Court of the Rostov Region pronounced the decision to grant the claim of the City Prosecutor's Office and obliged the Union "Women of Don" to get registered as a foreign agent.

The NGO filed appeals against the Court's decision; however, the court of appeal dismissed them. As a result, the NGO appealed to the ECtHR with a complaint about the decision of the Russian Supreme Court, which refused to grant the NGO's request to exclude the Union from the register of organizations carrying out the functions of foreign agents, the "Kommersant" reports with reference to Valentina Cherevatenko, the head of the Union.

It should be noted that after the Union had been included in the register of "foreign agents" in May 2014, the advocate of the Union "Women of Don" announced his intention to challenge the decision at the ECtHR, the website "Southern Federal" reports with reference to advocate Furkat Tishaev.
