Three Azerbaijani citizens convicted for participation in Syrian conflict

The Baku Court of Grave Crimes has sentenced Sadiq Mamedzade and Bakhtiyar Shakhbazi to 14 years in prison each; and Bakhruz Shakhbazi – to 12 years in prison, finding them guilty of taking part in the warfare in Syria.

According to the court, Bakhtiyar Shakhbazi, his son Bakhruz Shakhbazi and Sadiq Mamedzade had received training as members of illegal armed formations (IAFs), learn the use of various firearms, and then took part in combats.

They were charged under the articles of "creating armed formations or groups, not provided for by the legislation of Azerbaijani, as well as participation in creating and operating such" and "promoting religious trends under the pretext of holding religious ceremonies, or involvement in conflicts that have arisen outside of Azerbaijan on religious grounds, or holding exercises for this purpose, or creating a grouping", the APA reports.

On July 7, six Azerbaijani citizens, who had fought as IAF members in Syria, were sentenced to 14 and 15 years of freedom deprivation.
