Armenian society shows no active reaction to Permyakov's sentence for desertion

The society of Armenia has attached no special importance to the sentence pronounced by the Russian military court against Permyakov in the case of desertion. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by political analyst Ruben Megrabyan, an expert of the Armenian Centre for Political and International Studies.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 12 the Russian Garrison Military Court, at its session in Gyumri, convicted Permyakov, a soldier of the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri, on charges of desertion, theft and illegal possession of firearms to 10 years in a high security colony. Regarding the case of the murder of the Avetisyan family, it is planned that it will be considered by the Armenian court.

On January 12, in Gyumri, six members of the Avetisyan family were assassinated. The only survivor of the attack – the six-month-old Sergey Avetisyan – was hospitalized in critical condition and on January 19, he died. A Russian regular soldier Valery Permyakov was arrested as a suspect of committing the massacre.

According to Ruben Megrabyan, at the session, the court only listened to the consideration of the case of military crimes committed by Permyakov within the military unit, where he was serving as a soldier.

"It is too early to talk about the trial in the Permyakov's case. The Russian side has carried out a formal court session. No main consideration of the committed crime - the murder of the Avetisyan family members - has been carried out yet," the expert has emphasized.

According to Professor Arthur Atanesyan, the Head of the Department of Applied Sociology at the YerevanStateUniversity, Permyakov has been only partly punished by the Russian court verdict.

Professor Arthur Atanesyan has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the Armenian side, in its turn, should act quickly and professionally and not to delay the trial in the murder case.

The Professor believes that in case if the verdict of the Armenian court is not well understood and justified and the society does not get an answer to questions in the case then it is possible that a new wave of protests will rise.
