"Stop occupation of Georgia!" demands Diaspora in Vienna
On August 8, members of the Georgian Diaspora from different regions of Austria held a rally "Stop occupation!" in front of the OSCE building in Vienna. The action lasted for two hours.
The participants of the rally commemorated those killed in the 2008 war and reminded the OSCE and Europe as a whole that the Russia's occupation of Georgia continues, said the office of the State Minister for Diaspora Matters.
The office has added that the participants disseminated informational materials about the war in 2008. The action was supported by Ukrainian tourists; and other guests of the capital of Austria revealed their interest thereto, the "Georgia-Online" reports today.
In connection with the anniversary of the start of the conflict, protest action was also held in Tbilisi. On August 7, activists of the "United National Movement" (UNM) came to the Russian Embassy. They held flags of Georgia and Ukraine, and protested against the "Russia's aggressive actions" against both countries, the Radio "Echo of the Caucasus" reports.
On August 8, 2008, warfare of Georgia against South Ossetia broke out. Soon Russia interfered into the conflict. Active military actions lasted for five days. After that, Russia stated that the operation to force Georgia to peace was over; and on August 26, Russian President signed decrees on recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation.
