Law enforcers identify person killed in shootout as member of Dagestani underground

According to investigators, the person shot dead in the shootout with policemen in the Tabasaran District of Dagestan, turned out to be Magomed Ismailov, a member of the armed underground.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported, referring to a local law-enforcement source, that in the morning on July 19, in a wooded area near the village of Akka, Tabasaran District, in an armed clash with a group of unidentified attackers, who opened fire at policemen, a SWAT officer was killed. One of the attackers was shot dead by return fire.

According to investigators, law enforcers found an armed man in the course of their operative-search actions aimed to detain members of a subversive and terrorist grouping (STG).

"In response to a law enforcers' offer to lay down arms and surrender, Magomed Ismailov, a member of the STG, opened automatic fire in the direction of law enforcers," the Investigating Department for Dagestan of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) reported on July 20 on its website.

In the shootout, first the above SWAT officer was killed; and then, Ismailov was killed by return fire, the ICRF reports.
