Volunteers are actively restoring Tbilisi after flooding

Residents of Georgia, acting on their own initiative, are actively participating in restoration works after the flooding in Tbilisi and help the victims. Volunteers have deployed canteens and first aid centres, and coordinate their work through social networks.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at night on June 14, Tbilisi was struck by a heavy rain, which led to flooding. According to official sources, 19 people were lost; three more are still missing.

The city restoration and bank reinforcement works are controlled by a special interdepartmental commission. They continue cleaning Svanidze Street, which in fact became the epicentre of the disaster – five of the casualties lived in this street. Here, volunteers are mainly helping to clean houses from mud.

Volunteers continue taking part in recovering the Mziuri Park. There is no clear plan; people are just trying to do what they can, said David, a local resident.

The volunteers include students from Nigeria, Azerbaijan and Armenia, who study in Tbilisi universities.

With volunteers' help, the obstructions in Heroes' Square were quickly removed; and on June 15, they resumed traffic there. Volunteers also help the people resettled from destroyed houses. Social networks report the collection of hygiene means, foodstuffs and clothes for them.
