Georgian authorities engage army in elimination of flood aftermath
Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili has signed a decree to engage the Georgian armed forces in the elimination of the aftermath of the emergency situation which resulted from the flooding.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at night of June 14, in Tbilisi, several streets, houses, and basements were flooded as a result of heavy rain, and a wall of one of the buildings collapsed.
The Georgian authorities have decided to engage helicopters and an engineering brigade of ground forces of the Georgian army in the elimination of the aftermath of the flooding, the "Interfax" reports with reference to Irina Imerlishvili, the Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia.
As a result of the flooding, residents of a number of the Tbilisi districts were deprived of gas and electricity supply. Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has issued a resolution to establish the emergency headquarters to eliminate the consequences of the flooding in the city. The Tbilisi Mayor's Office called on the city residents to render assistance to utility service companies.
Merab Gaprindashvili, the chief of the Department of Geology of the National Environment Agency of Georgia, has mentioned a landslide which blocked the gorge of the Vere River and which actually formed an artificial reservoir as a possible cause of the significant consequences of the flooding.
