Journalist Elchin Mamed detained in Azerbaijan
In Azerbaijan, law enforcers have detained Elchin Mamed, the Chairman of the NGO "Legal Education of Sumgait Youth" and the editor-in-chief of the on-line edition "Yukselish Namine" (In the Name of Revival). This was reported by Elchin Gasanov, an assistant of Elchin Mamed.
According to Elchin Gasanov, this morning, Elchin Mamed has been detained at the Baku airport after his arrival from Brussels.
Elchin Gasanov believes that Elchin Mamed "has been detained in connection with the criminal case against a number of local and foreign NGOs, which are under investigation at the Investigating Department for Serious Crimes of the General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan." "A number of well-known civil society activists, including Leyla Yunus, Intigam Aliev, and Rasul Jafarov, have been already arrested in the case. They are accused of tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurial activities, and some other crimes."
