Resident of Chechnya sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment for taking part in war in Syria

In Chechnya, the Court of Urus-Martan has announced the verdict against a 23-year-old local resident, accused of involvement in the Syrian war on the side of the militants.

The verdict against Aslan Bashaev was announced yesterday, on May 27.

"He was found guilty of involvement in the military actions in the territory of Syria and sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony, followed by restriction of freedom for one year," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by an official of the Chechen Prosecutor's Office.

According to the official, Aslan Bashaev has admitted his guilt of involvement in an illegal armed formation (IAF) in the territory of Syria and repented of his deeds. "The minimum punishment stipulated for such a crime is 5 years of imprisonment, and the maximum 10 years of imprisonment. Taking into account the fact that Aslan Bashaev repented of his deeds and other circumstances, the Court has announced the appropriate punishment," the prosecutor said.
