CE treats Russia's treaties on alliance with Abkhazia and South Ossetia as illegal

On May 13, the Council of Europe (CE) declared illegal the treaty on alliance and strategic partnership between Russia and Abkhazia and the treaty on alliance and integration between Russia and South Ossetia. Besides, according to the CE, those treaties were signed in violation of international law.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 18, 2015, in Moscow, Presidents Vladimir Putin and Leonid Tibilov signed the treaty on alliance and integration between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia. On November 24, 2014, in Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Raul Khadjimba, the leader of Abkhazia, signed the new treaty on alliance between Russia and Abkhazia.

On May 13, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe issued a resolution to condemn Russia for the violation of international law, since the ministers saw the violation of the law in the conclusion of the treaties on alliance between Russia and Abkhazia and South Ossetia. According to the ministers, these documents are detrimental to security and stability in the region and they contradict the international obligations assumed by Russia when the country signed the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, the website of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) reports.
