European Parliament calls for international investigation into Nemtsov's killing
The Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have adopted a resolution stating the need for an independent international investigation into the assassination of the Russian politician Boris Nemtsov.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that five persons have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder: Zaur Dadaev, Anzor Gubashev, Khamzat Bakhaev, Tamerlan Eskerkhanov and Shagid Gubashev. Investigators treat Dadaev and Gubashev as direct perpetrators of the crime.
The resolution of the European Parliament states that aid that Nemtsov devoted his life to building a "more democratic, prosperous and open Russia."
The authors of the resolution state that Nemtsov was gathering confirmations of the presence of Russian troops in Eastern Ukraine and was killed two days before the scheduled mass antiwar action.
The resolution also calls on the Russian authorities to stop the practice of pressure on and intimidation of oppositional leaders, civil society activists and media professionals.
According to law enforcers, Dadaev gave confessions; however, at the trial and at his meeting with rights defenders from the Public Oversight Commission (POC) he refused to plead guilty.
