In Azerbaijan, "ReAl" demands fulfilment of ECtHR's decision in Ilgar Mamedov's case

The social movement "ReAl" has demanded from the Azerbaijani authorities to fulfil the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in the case against Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the movement "ReAl", and immediately release him from custody. The Ilgar Mamedov's advocate has also declared that his client is being unlawfully kept in custody.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the movement "ReAl", and Tofig Yagublu, the Deputy Chairman of the "Musavat" Party, were sentenced to seven and five years of imprisonment, respectively, on charges of organizing riots in Ismayilli on January 23-24, 2013.

In May 2014, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) recognized a violation of the rights of Ilgar Mamedov and obliged the Azerbaijani authorities to pay him compensation in the amount of 22,000 euros. Representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities challenged the decision; however, on October 13, 2014, a panel of five judges of the ECtHR refused to accept the complaint for consideration.

The movement "ReAl" ("Republican Alternative") has issued a statement that the ongoing arrest of Ilgar Mamedov contradicts the decision of the ECtHR.

Advocate Fuad Agaev has noted that till present, the Plenum of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has not considered the question of the fulfilment of the ECtHR's decision in the case against Ilgar Mamedov and that on January 13, the Supreme Court postponed for indefinite period the consideration of the cassation appeal filed by Ilgar Mamedov against his sentence to five years of imprisonment.
