Sochi scientists awarded by Russian Govt for water purification method

On March 3, Sochi residents, Professor Nikolai Kulikov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and Mikhail Zubov, Candidate of Technical Sciences, received documents on being awarded the title of laureates of the 2014 Award of the Russian Government in the field of science and technology. They were awarded for the development of a wastewater treatment method. The scientists hope that their development will be applied in their hometown.

Professor Kulikov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the new method assume biotechnological treatment of wastewater.

He reminded that earlier he repeatedly stated that in Sochi, because of the environment pollution, both the potable and sea water is contaminated with dangerous microbes; he had proposed solutions to the problem. "I see that I was heard at the very top; they've even rewarded me for my development; however, now we need to implement the method in practice. I am open and ready to provide all the necessary materials; however so far nobody was interested in them at the level of the city and territory," said the scientist.

Earlier, Sochi residents repeatedly expressed their concerns about the wastewater treatment in the city. In September 2014, a residents' assembly was held in the city, where people stated a life-threatening ecological situation: the city sewerage system did not function; and the sewage flew into the Black Sea, getting to the city and sanatorium beaches.
