Georgia's GPO demands from Ukraine to extradite Saakashvili

The General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Georgia has sent a petition to Ukraine for the extradition of the former president Mikhail Saakashvili, who is now employed there as an adviser to the Ukrainian President. However, the Ukrainian party refuses to cooperate on the matter, said the GPO.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Georgia Saakashvili was accused of abuse of power, embezzlement of budget funds, dispersal of the opposition rally in November 2007, the pogrom in the office of the "Imedi" TV, capture of the property of the billionaire Badri Patarkatsishvili, involvement in the beating up of the MP Valery Gelashvili, and the murder of the banker Sandro Girgvliani.

The GPO of Ukraine was the addressee of the petitions to extradite Mikhail Saakashvili, as well as the ex-Minister of Justice of Georgia Zurab Adeishvili, who is wanted by the Interpol, to Georgia.

Today, the website of the Georgia's GPO has reported that their Ukrainian counterpart dismissed the petition, despite the fact that there are Georgian-Ukrainian obligations to cooperate in extradition issues.

Let us remind you that on February 13, Saakashvili was officially appointed as an off-the-staff advisor to the President of Ukraine. According to Saakashvili, he will oversee the delivery of arms from Western countries to Ukraine.
