Athletes from the Caucasus at the Olympics in London are mostly represented in power and combat kinds of sport
The thirtieth Olympic Games start in London today. The capital of Great Britain has become the Olympic host for already the third time. Athletes from the Caucasus will also participate in the competitions, generally in power and combat kinds of sport: Greco-Roman style, freestyle wrestling, women’s style, judo, tae kwon do, boxing and weight lifting.
Olympics-2012 will last from July, 27, till August, 12. Over 10,5 thousand athletes from 205 countries of the World will take part in the events. All in all 302 sets of medals will be awarded in 37 sports nominations.
Athletes from the countries of Southern Caucasus and regions of Northern Caucasus of Russia will participate practically in all kinds of the events. Traditionally for the Caucasian region, a great number of athletes will compete in power events and all kinds of wrestling. In particular, according to the “Caucasian Knot’s” data, 80 athletes will strive for victory in Greco-Roman style, freestyle wrestling, women’s style, judo, tae kwon do, boxing (there are 141 persons all in all on the list of those who went to the Olympics from the Caucasus) and 20 in weight lifting.
Georgia sent 35 athletes who won the Olympic pass in 11 sports nominations to the Olympics all in all. 25 Armenian Olympians will strive for medals in 9 kinds of events. 53 representatives of Azerbaijan will compete in 16 kinds of events. The Russian Olympic combined team consists of 436 persons. The athletes will compete in 34 kinds of sport.
