A reception point for aid to migrant workers opened in Sochi

A reception point of ”Migration and Right” network recently opened in Sochi will be consulting migrant workers and rendering them legal aid. This was reported by Coordinator of the reception Semen Simonov.

“In connection with construction of Olympic objects a lot of natives of Central Asia come to work here and their rights are often violated”, Coordinator of the new reception point said to the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

”Migration and Right” network is one of the programs of “Memorial” Human Rights Center.

Simonov considers non-payment of wages to the builders for the reason of the absence of official labour contracts the main point of violation of the migrants’ rights. Builders can also be banished from the country for the same reason of the absence of contracts.

Yet before the beginning of the reception’s work nine citizens of Tajikistan whom a construction company refused to pay wages appealed to the human rights activists. After negotiations the workers received their salary from the company with the help of “Citizen’s Assistance” group.

The reception point is currently considering appeals from five more builders from Uzbekistan who worked at the Olympic objects.

In the opinion of Lieutenant General of militia Alexander Gurov, migrants in Russia often live in awful conditions and are used by corruptionists.
