Chief of FSIN Department in Krasnodar Territory listens to demands of participants of picket to support Pavel Cherevatov

This morning, inKrasnodar, in front of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) in theKrasnodarTerritory, representatives of the public organization "Prostye Lyudi" (Ordinary People), held a picket to support Pavel Cherevatov, the head of the Abinsk Human Rights Centre, who was serving his sentence. The participants of the protest action were met by representatives of the Regional FSIN Department, including Yuri Kulik, Chief of the Regional FSIN Department.

According to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, the public action, sanctioned by the city administration, took place from 08:30 till 09:30 a.m.Moscow time in front of the FSIN Department in theKrasnodarTerritory. The protest action was attended by six persons, including Valentina Cherevatova, the wife of the convicted human rights defender.

The participants of the protest action passed to representatives of the FSIN Department in theKrasnodarTerritory, headed by Yuri Kulik, Chief of the FSIN Department, a list of violations of Pavel Cherevatov's rights, completed by the protesters. In their turn, Yuri Kulik and his subordinates have stated that convicted Pavel Cherevatov is treated exclusively in accordance with the law. They have also noted that Pavel Cherevatov personally rejects in writing form a medical examination and treatment.

In May 2009, Pavel Cherevatov, the head of the Abinsk Human Rights Centre, labour veteran, was found guilty of beating a militiaman and sentenced to 5 years and 6 months of imprisonment to be served in a common security colony and payment of compensation.

Relatives and friends of Pavel Cherevatov claim ordered nature of the criminal case, illegal detention and unfair verdict. They also state that as a result of detention in prisons, the pensioner had been infected with pulmonary tuberculosis, received a number of other diseases and became a Category II invalid.
